
Giorgos Tsemperopoulos
Biography
Giorgos Tsemberopoulos is a Greek director, producer and screenwriter. He was born in Athens. He studied economics at the Athens University of Economics and Business, while working as a photographer. He studied directing at the American Film Institute in Los Angeles, where he lived and worked until 1981. In 1987, he founded Filmiki Productions SA in Athens, where he produces commercials and directs feature films. Former member of the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Film Center, founding member of the Association of Film Directors/Producers, former member of the Board of Directors of the Thessaloniki Film Festival, member of the Board of Directors of Greenpeace Hellas. In October 2019, he was elected president of the Hellenic Film Academy, a position he holds to this day. Megaras' film, which he co-created with Sakis Maniatis in 1974, has been described as an important political document and the first ecological documentary in Greece. In 1974, it was awarded the FIPRESCI Prize at the Berlin International Film Festiva and the Best Production Award at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival. In 2013, it was honored by the Megaron Concert Hall for the 40th anniversary of its first screening, with the event: "The power of cinema to intervene in major social struggles..."
